Dolph Ziggler reveals why 'WWE had no choice' but to make him world champion in 2013

GiveMeSport | Updated: 2018-10-10 00:00:32

Dolph Ziggler has had a career most professional wrestlers can only dream of.

The 38-year-old is a two-time Tag Team champion, two-time U.S. champion, a six-time Intercontinental champion, a two-time world champion in the WWE having also won the Money in the Bank match.

There is no denying Ziggler's talent. The Showoff is commonly regarded as one of the best performers and sellers in the business today, and for quite some time.

But, he's never quite ascended to the very top spot in WWE, where superstars become the face of the company. A spot many would argue his talent deserves.

But back in 2013, with AJ Lee and Big E by his side, Ziggler was a part of one of the most iconic moments in Monday Night Raw history.

The night after WrestleMania 29, Ziggler decided to cash in his Money in the bank contract on Alberto Del Rio, a man who had just had his ankle tortured by Jack Swagger.

The crowd went crazy for Ziggler and it's one of the loudest reactions you will ever hear at a WWE show.

GiveMeSport had the chance to talk to Ziggler on Monday during a Conference Call and we asked him what Vince McMahon said to him before he cashed in and while Ziggler chose to keep that a secret, he did reveal why the WWE had no choice but to put him in that spot.

"I would love to tell you that [what McMahon said], but I'm going to have to save that for a book.

"One of the coolest things I have ever done is have my music play, as a bad guy, who loses every damn night except for that match to get that contract, didn't speak on the microphone, and was coming out to the ring to an injured bad guy - and everyone was so nuts for this match and for the cash-in.

"And it's not just because they [fans] were rooting for me, the reason I was in that position was because of the fans," Ziggler said. "They could have written me off and said 'We don't care about your hard work' but their repetitive noise drowned out so many other things that the WWE had no choice but to let me go out there and let me do my thing- and I'll never forget that."

Ziggler has been red-hot at several times in his career and the WWE always seem to hesitate on really pulling the trigger with him.

The former amateur wrestling standout is now in the main storyline on Raw as he sides with Braun Strowman and Drew McIntyre in the Dogs of War against The Shield and it shows he is still very valuable to the company.

Let's hope he has another Money in the Bank-esque moment left in his career.
