Pro golfer lost over £200k after what he did during his final hole of US Open

A top-five finish at a major golf tournament can always be considered impressive, and it not only puts the golfer in the limelight, but also positions himself in the same pedestal among the elites of the competition.

The 2018 US Open was no different as it witnessed such a scenario as Tony Finau came menacingly close to finishing inside the top three, only to miss out at the last moment.

The Utah-based golfer had a brilliant outing at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and started the final hole tied for third place with Dustin Johnson.

However, a lacklustre performance saw him end up double bogeying on the 18th, and his six on the par-4 dropped him to fifth, which eventually earned him $469,460, as per Bleacher Report.

Anyone would consider that amount of money highly remarkable, but how much did he lose for dropping two spots?

Roughly $214,372. Quite a hefty amount, isn’t it?

Had he finished tied third, Finau could have pocketed a total of $683,832.

He bogeyed on holes 2, 3 and 4, but recovered quickly to even par for the day with five birdies alongside two more bogeys. Any chance of catching leader Brooks Koepka ended when he missed a birdie on the par-3 on the 17th.

Koepka ultimately won the tournament – his second in a row.

Finau took home the fourth highest pay-out of his pro career, taking his total earnings over $10million in his fourth PGA Tour season.

Despite the result, the 28-year-old was content with his overall show.

He said: “Unfortunate what happened on 18, but to post my first top-five finish in a major this week is pretty cool.

“This is the first major championship where I was really in contention.... Coming down the stretch, having a chance to try and catch [Koepka], it was really fun for me,” Finau concluded.
