Golf fans freak out as Tiger Woods wears neck tape - but the truth has been revealed

After stating this year's Open provides him with his best chance at a 15th major title, Tiger Woods has sparked concern by wearing supportive neck tape prior to Thursday's first round.

Playing in the 147th Open Championship, Woods hasn't appeared at the prestigious competition since missing the cut in 2015.

Woods' form has been lacking since his struggles with back injuries and social problems. Having had four back surgeries in recent years, it's no wonder fans are concerned over the sighting of medical tape.

However, Bob Harig of ESPN delivered the good news that the kinesiology tape is not being worn due to injury.

In fact, the tape is because the golfer reportedly slept crooked on Wednesday evening..

The 42-year-old has been slowly regaining his form since his run of injuries, and whilst the tape looks to be nothing more than a precautionary measure, all eyes will be on the American over the first few holes to see whether the three-time Open champion can overcome any pain he may suffer.

Aside from injury worries, Woods will have a keen eye on the weekend's weather as play gets underway at Carnaustie.

Woods had to wait until 3:21pm to begin his campaign and was wary of being caught out by the weather, similar to in the events at Muirfield in 2002, where his bid for an unprecedented calendar Grand Slam was blown away by a third round of 81, at that stage the worst score in his professional career.

"I had won the two previous major championships that year and I was really playing well," Woods recalled.

"I think I was only a few back of the lead. I think Stevie (Steve Elkington) went out there early, posted a good number, and (after the storm) was near the last group come Sunday.

"I hadn't seen a weather change like that of all my years on Tour, not like that, not that quickly. Normally, if it does blow that hard or it does rain that hard, usually there's some kind of lightning involved, and you've got to have a stoppage of play. There was no stoppage of play. We had to play on."

Despite the reports suggesting Woods didn't enjoy a comfortable nights sleep and playable weather, Woods started brightly from the first tee, with his opening approach allowing him to stroke home a birdie opportunity.

Fears of the tape were almost eliminated by the time Woods finished the par 4 2nd, with Nick Faldo confirming the presence of the KT tape, and a smooth swing from Woods alleviating any fear of injury.

The Open continues through to July 22, with Woods hoping to build on a positive start.
