John Kavanagh reveals who Conor McGregor could fight in boxing after Khabib defeat

Questions hang over the future of Conor McGregor after his devastating defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.

The Irishman had been out the octagon for nearly two years and made his return to MMA against the most feared fighter in the sport, wielding an almost unprecedented record of 26-0.

He extended that to 27-0 over the weekend, outclassing the returning McGregor across four rounds before securing the victory by submission.

However, the fight was overshadowed by the drama that followed the stoppage with Nurmagomedov vaulting the cage and attacking members of McGregor's team.

There was also an exchange between McGregor himself and two associates of Nurmagomedov who raided the octagon as the drama unfolded.

McGregor defeated by Khabib

Since the bout, the 'Notorious' has taken to Twitter and suggested he already wants a rematch, a fact corroborated by his coach John Kavanagh.

Despite McGregor losing the fight in such convincing fashion, it's clear the 30-year-old wants to set the record straight and look to achieve a similar feat to the Nate Diaz rematch.

There's an acknowledgement that at this stage of his career, McGregor is only interested in the very biggest fights and wouldn't be interested in tune-up bouts against somebody like Anthony Pettis.

Boxing fights being discussed

Nevertheless, if a second clash with Nurmagomedov is out of the question, there are potential mega-money fights elsewhere and Kavanagh has revealed that many names are being discussed.

During an appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast, McGregor's coach revealed that his fighter would consider a return to boxing and name-dropped two major clashes.

“There are all sorts of crazy rumours going around the management team and the fight team about what might happen next," Kavanagh explained.

“It could be boxing, it could be him [Malignaggi], it could be Floyd.

“All sorts of names are being thrown about.”

Just imagine the pay-per-view figures for either of those fights.

Although Paulie Malignaggi is far from the biggest name in combat sport, the American made the news for his role in the McGregor camp last year and their sparring footage has become notorious.

The pair have been going back and forth on social media ever since, so the possibility of a boxing match would certainly be of interest.

Then there's a rematch with Floyd Mayweather that would certainly draw money and attention regardless of whether it's in the boxing ring or octagon.

There were even suggestions that McGregor and Mayweather could fight boxing rules in the cage, but with the addition of leg kicks.

That being said, Rogan was keen to note how much of an advantage that would give McGregor and cited Shannon Briggs' unfortunate foray into MMA.

Regardless of who he chooses, though, it's clear some lucrative fights are being discussed in the McGregor camp.
